Coloring is a favorite pastime, and really affordable entertainment for young children (a big plus for parents struggling to buy “educational” toys in a down economy). In addition, C.L.A.P. books are designed to improve fine motor, creativity, reading and literacy skills, while appealing to different types of learners. For coaches who are challenged by teaching kids as young as 3 and 4 years old a sport like soccer, C.L.A.P. books are extremely valuable. For parents who aren’t familiar with the basics of sport, C.L.A.P. books are indispensable as well.

Learn & Play captures all of those early childhood memories in a unique book, designed and created by them. It’s kind of like scrapbook meets coloring book meets how-to picture book!

At Let’s Gogh Art, our philosophy in our classes, workshops and programs is of a non-competitive, non-judgemental environment where kids and adults are under no pressure to perform or to determine who’s art is better. That being said, some children and adults want to feel the thrill of competing and we don’t discourage them to go out and seek the recognition the desire, to make some money from their art or to receive art supplies and money, reduction of tuition or maybe even a free ticket to college.

Emma and Kate (Art Hearts for Haiti project creators) were very excited to see their pictures on the front page of the Sentinel and Enterprise today (www.sentinelandenterprise.com). A half dozen schools and about 100 people have committed to making hearts. We hope to take a few designs and make them into shirts that can then be sold (with proceeds going to orphanages in Haiti). That’s phase 2. Thanks for helping Kate and Emma spread the word about their cause. Just in case anyone is wondering, we’re not planning to send the hearts to the most damaged areas as these people need food, water and medical supplies right now. We will, however, be keeping them in our hearts!

Hello and welcome to the “Art Hearts for Haiti” project. Our names are Kate and Emma. We are 7-year old twin girls, who along with our mom, came up with the idea for Art Hearts for Haiti.

We’re asking friends, family and people everywhere to participant in our project. It’s easy to join…all you need is some art supplies, paper (or other type of base) and your creativity. The next step is to draw or make a heart shape and create a really cool design inside the heart. You can also write a special message on, around or in your heart. Once your creation(s) is complete, simply mail it to:

Art Hearts for Haiti, c/o Let’s Gogh Art, P.O. Box 664, Lunenburg, MA 01462

As our sponsor, Let’s Gogh Art will be helping us to package the hearts and then mail them to the children and people of Haiti. We’ll also be scanning and posting many of the hearts we receive here on this website for all the world to see (only first names of artists will be included if provided). THERE IS NO DEADLINE for your participation. As we receive hearts, we’ll be mailing them out.

We both love art. It makes us feel good. We hope that the hearts we collect and send will make the children and people of Haiti feel good too. As our mom says, the art hearts will help people feel a little less alone, a little more hope, and a lot more loved. Thanks for participating. We can’t wait to get lots of hearts!

Love, Kate and Emma

I enjoyed a second of four scheduled visits today to a Bright Horizons childcare center. During the four visits, we’re offering our popular StoryArt program. At the first visit, dressed in an Indian headdress and bear claw necklace, I read the story, The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush. The children (ages 2-5) then painted cardboard teepees. Following my visit, the center director decided to keep the theme going and the two classrooms collaborated and constructed a life-size teepee. I love it when a center or group does this, and when parents keep the theme going at home as well.

As a sat down to introduce this month’s story, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, a four year old, bright- eyed boy asked, “Miss Lynn, where is your Indian costume?”

No matter how many programs we are fortunate to offer, I continue to be amazed by the power of these little minds. Not only do children remember the art projects we work on, they also remember the story, minute details, characters, storylines, and sometimes even my name. As I was wrapping up the mini book project we worked on today, a little girl asked why I didn’t dress up as a meatball! I guess I better start thinking about my snowman costume for next month’s theme and story, Snowmen at Night. At least this will be a little easier than a meatball! I’m ready for the challenge, inspired by these little minds, watching their creativity expand, their comprehension improve and their love of books and art expand. It’s all quite fulfilling.
