Color. Learn & Play Offers One-of-a-Kind Education and Entertainment for Young Athletes Across the Globe

Oftentimes, young children are thrown into the world of sports without any understanding of the sport they’re playing. Written by Lynn Toomey a lifelong athlete, coach, author and entrepreneur, Color. Learn & Play is new series of books that give young athletes a jump-start on the basics of their favorite sport with simple, easy to understand language and engaging illustrations. Integrating coloring, drawing, writing, games, and journaling, Color. Learn & Play (or C.L.A.P. for short) also gives children special pages to record milestones and highlights from their sports season, as well as blank pages for pasting photos and mementos. Coloring is a favorite pastime, and really affordable entertainment for young children (a big plus for parents struggling to buy “educational” toys in a down economy). In addition, C.L.A.P. books are designed to improve fine motor, creativity, reading and literacy skills, while appealing to different types of learners. For coaches who are challenged by teaching kids as young as 3 and 4 years old a sport like soccer, C.L.A.P. books are extremely valuable. The book gives an overview of Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Racing, Downhill Skiing and Sled Hockey. Like the other books, children can read and learn, color, write, play games and record memories.

• Scholastic and Writing Awards- Unfortunately, it seems the only artwork that wins in this contest is superrealism.
• Kansas Student Technology Leaders competition- This is open only to grade 6-12 Kansas students. Judged items: multimedia, video, technology integration, and website. Deadline: March 9.

High School Art Contests / Exhibitions

• IGN Video Game Graphics-Submit by April
• International Student Art Contest- By the Rotary Club. Submit in July.
• Scholastic and Writing Awards- Unfortunately, it seems the only artwork that wins in this contest is superrealism.
• Artists Magazine Annual Art Competition - For artists 16 and over.
• Fresh Brain’s Avatar Contest- for ages 13-18. Design an avatar and win Skullcandy headphones.

K-12 Art Contests

• Get to Know Contest- Wildlife artist Robert Bateman is offering prizes and publication in a national publication for Canadian students age 19 and under. Deadline is May 27, 2009.
• Constitution Day Poster Contest- Sponsored by the National Archives- Plains Region. Deadline is October 1, 2009.
• Irvington Halloween Poster Contest- Entries are due every year by July 31.
• Saatchi Online Art Prize For Schools- A first prize of £10,000 will be awarded to the winning school’s art department. A further £2000 will be given to the winning pupil to be spent on computer and art equipment.
• Society for the Performing Arts- They have a contest for K-12 students in the greater Houston area to showcase their art. Cash prizes, scholarships, and museum membership are the prizes. Deadline is November 14.
• Youth Wildlife Art Contest- This art contest has a deadline of October 1 and has a first place prize of $500.

Art Contests for Anyone / Exhibitions

• Armed Services YMCA- their contest is in November
• Art Challenge- Stained glass competition. $2,500 prize. December deadline
• Art Wars- They have a contest every week. Open to all ages.
• Big Draw, a contest for any Australian. Deadline is October 15.
• B.J. Spoke Gallery- They have an annual juried competition.
• Blizzard Art Contest- Submit in September. BIG prizes
• Cartasia- Festival internazionale della carta. Deadline is June 22.
• Congressional Art Competition
• Dick Blick’s Linoleum Block Print contest- submit in March
• Earth Science Week Contests- for grades K-9
• Game Art Contest- Open to U.S. and Canada. Deadline is March 19. This is an annual contest. Winner gets $10,000!
• Halloween Picture Contest- Begins late September
• IASP Two-Dimensional Art Contest- Deadline in December. Limited to Indiana schools
• Los Angeles Center for Digital Art- Also see their juried art contest. Winners get cash prizes and prints of their work
• Manifest Equality- Deadline for submissions is Feb. 19. This contest has the theme of equal rights.
• Masters of Today- The accept art for inclusion of their art books.
• Miami Art Contest- This is open to anyone. The winner gets a roundtrip air and hotel to Miami Beach for 4 days and 3 night and a gallery showing.
• National Center for Culturally Responsive Educational Systems- Submit by October
• New York Realism- A student art competition. Deadline is April 11, 2009.
• Orleans House Gallery Exhibition- Deadline for submissions is the end of April 2009. The exhibition is at Twickenham in the UK.
• Short Film Contest- Held in June
• Tee Juice- Participants can win up to $1,000 for T-shirt art.
• 4-H - Every summer, state counties have art competitions. Look your state up for details.
• WPClipart Contest- With gift cards to grade school, middle school, and high school clip art competitions. Deadline: September 21.

We’re asking friends, family and people everywhere to participant in our project. It’s easy to join…all you need is some art supplies, paper (or other type of base) and your creativity. The next step is to draw or make a heart shape and create a really cool design inside the heart. You can also write a special message on, around or in your heart. As a sat down to introduce this month’s story, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, a four year old, bright- eyed boy asked, “Miss Lynn, where is your Indian costume?”

No matter how many programs we are fortunate to offer, I continue to be amazed by the power of these little minds. Not only do children remember the art projects we work on, they also remember the story, minute details, characters, storylines, and sometimes even my name. As I was wrapping up the mini book project we worked on today, a little girl asked why I didn’t dress up as a meatball! I guess I better start thinking about my snowman costume for next month’s theme and story, Snowmen at Night. At least this will be a little easier than a meatball! I’m ready for the challenge, inspired by these little minds, watching their creativity expand, their comprehension improve and their love of books and art expand. It’s all quite fulfilling.
